Strange AC Noises and What They Mean

Equipment usually tells you it’s failing before it fails. The problem is that most homeowners don’t know the vocabulary, so the warning gets ignored until something expensive happens on a Saturday in July.
Here’s the translation guide. I’ve sorted it by sound, and flagged which ones mean shut it off right now.
First, What’s Normal
Some noise is expected, and knowing the baseline helps you notice when something changes.
Normal sounds include a low hum from the outdoor unit while running, a soft whoosh of air at the vents, a click when the system starts and stops, and some light popping or ticking from ductwork as metal expands and contracts with temperature.
The thing to pay attention to isn’t volume, it’s change. A noise that’s new, or one that’s been getting worse, is the signal.
Banging or Clanging
What it usually means: something is loose or broken inside the compressor, or the blower wheel has come out of balance and is striking the housing.
A loud bang from the outdoor unit often means a connecting rod, piston pin, or crankshaft has failed inside the compressor. From the indoor unit, it’s more often a blower wheel that’s loose on the shaft or has lost a balance weight.
Urgency: high. Shut the system off at the thermostat and call. Continuing to run a compressor with internal damage turns a possible repair into a certain replacement, and compressors are the most expensive component in the system.
Screeching or Squealing
What it usually means: a failing motor bearing, or on older equipment a slipping blower belt.
A high-pitched metal-on-metal screech from the outdoor unit is typically the condenser fan motor bearing. Indoors, it’s the blower motor.
There’s one more possibility that matters. On systems with a scroll compressor, a loud screech can indicate dangerously high internal pressure.
Urgency: high if it’s loud and sudden, moderate if it’s a gradual squeal on startup. A bearing that’s beginning to squeal will fail, and replacing a motor is far cheaper than replacing a motor plus whatever it damaged. Don’t let it run for weeks.
Hissing
What it usually means: a refrigerant leak, or air escaping from ductwork.
A steady hiss near the refrigerant lines or the indoor coil suggests refrigerant escaping through a small leak. A louder hiss or shriek can mean high pressure, which is a safety concern.
Hissing from around ductwork or a vent is usually a duct leak, which wastes money but isn’t dangerous.
Urgency: moderate to high. Refrigerant leaks get worse and running low on charge damages the compressor. In Savannah the giveaway is often hissing paired with weak cooling and ice on the lines.
Bubbling or Gurgling
What it usually means: either refrigerant with air in the line, or, more commonly here, a condensate drain problem.
In our climate I’d check the drain first. Gurgling from the indoor unit frequently means water backing up in a partially clogged condensate line. That’s the most common summer call we run, and it’s something you can often clear yourself.
Urgency: moderate. Not dangerous, but a clogged drain becomes water damage.
Buzzing
What it usually means: several possibilities, most of them electrical.
- Loose electrical connection or failing contactor. The most common cause.
- A failing capacitor. Often paired with an outdoor unit that hums but won’t start the fan.
- Debris in the outdoor unit vibrating against the fan.
- Loose panels vibrating against the cabinet, which is the harmless version.
- A compressor struggling to start.
Urgency: moderate to high. Electrical buzzing deserves attention. If it’s accompanied by any burning smell, or if the breaker has tripped, shut it off at the breaker and call immediately.
Clicking
What it usually means: a single click at startup and shutdown is normal, that’s a relay. Repeated, persistent clicking is not.
Constant clicking usually points to a failing relay or control board, or a thermostat repeatedly trying and failing to start the system.
Urgency: moderate. A system that keeps trying to start and failing is hard on components.
Humming
What it usually means: a low steady hum during operation is normal. A loud hum from a unit that isn’t starting is the classic failed capacitor.
That specific combination, loud hum from the outdoor unit with the fan not spinning, is probably the single most common repair in Savannah. It runs roughly $150 to $350.
Urgency: moderate. Turn the system off at the thermostat until it’s repaired. A compressor repeatedly attempting to start without a functioning capacitor can damage itself. And please don’t try to start the fan by spinning it with a stick.
Rattling
What it usually means: loose hardware, debris in the cabinet, or a fan blade coming out of balance.
Frequently it’s genuinely minor, a loose screw or a stick in the condenser. It can also be the early stage of something more serious, like a fan blade loosening on its hub.
Urgency: low to moderate. Cut power at the disconnect and look inside the outdoor unit for leaves and debris. If it’s clear and still rattling, have it looked at.
Whistling
What it usually means: air moving through a restriction.
Most often a clogged filter, closed supply vents, or undersized return ductwork. Air forced through too small an opening whistles.
Urgency: low, but don’t ignore it. Restricted airflow in our humidity is the main precursor to frozen evaporator coils. Change the filter and open every vent.
Vibration or Pulsing
What it usually means: the outdoor unit isn’t sitting level, its mounting pad has settled, or the fan is out of balance.
Ground settling is common around here with our soil and rainfall. A condenser pad that’s tilted over a few years puts strain on the refrigerant line connections.
Urgency: low, but worth correcting. Cheap to fix now, and it prevents line stress.
Shut It Off Immediately If
Regardless of the specific sound, stop the system and call if you have:
- Any burning or electrical smell
- A loud bang followed by the system not running
- Grinding metal-on-metal
- A breaker that trips when you restart it
- Visible smoke or scorch marks
In those cases cut power at the breaker, not just the thermostat.
Why Early Attention Pays
The economics on this are straightforward.
A condenser fan motor caught while it’s squealing is a few hundred dollars. The same motor allowed to seize can overheat the compressor, and now you’re looking at thousands.
A capacitor replaced in May is routine. A capacitor that fails in August takes an emergency rate and a wait.
