Why Your AC Freezes Up in Savannah Humidity (and How to Stop It)

There’s something genuinely strange about opening up your air handler in late May and finding a block of ice, while it’s 91 degrees outside.

It’s one of the most common calls we run in early summer, and almost every one traces back to a handful of causes. Savannah’s humidity makes it noticeably worse than it would be in a drier climate, and that’s worth understanding if you want it to stop happening.

Why Ice Forms at All

Your evaporator coil, the indoor one, gets cold because liquid refrigerant expands inside it and absorbs heat from the air your blower pushes across it.

Two conditions have to hold for that to work correctly. Enough warm air has to keep moving across the coil, and the refrigerant has to be at the right pressure.

Break either one and the coil’s surface temperature drops below freezing. Any moisture in the air that touches it turns to frost instead of condensing into water. Frost restricts airflow further, which makes the coil colder, which makes more frost. It compounds on itself until you have a solid block of ice.

Where Savannah Makes It Worse

Here’s the coastal Georgia part.

Ice needs moisture. Our summer air carries an enormous amount of it, with dew points routinely sitting in the low to mid 70s from June through September. That’s genuinely high, comparable to the Gulf Coast and considerably worse than most of the country.

In a dry climate, a marginally underperforming system might just cool poorly. Here, that same system has so much available moisture that it frosts over.

The second factor is our season length. Systems here run essentially March through October. That’s continuous duty for seven or eight months, so small problems have a long runway to become big ones.

The Five Causes

1. Restricted airflow (by far the most common)

Anything that reduces air moving across the coil:

  • A dirty filter. After Savannah’s pine pollen season, filters load up fast. This is the number one cause and the easiest to fix.
  • Closed or blocked supply vents. Closing vents in unused rooms does not save money. It raises static pressure and reduces flow across the coil. Leave them open.
  • A dirty evaporator coil. Dust that gets past the filter over years builds an insulating layer.
  • A failing blower motor or slipping belt. If the fan isn’t moving its rated airflow, the coil overcools.
  • Crushed or disconnected ductwork.
  • An overly restrictive filter. A MERV 13+ panel filter in a system not designed for it can cause exactly this. More on choosing the right MERV rating.

2. Low refrigerant from a leak

Less refrigerant in the coil means lower pressure, and lower pressure means a lower boiling point, which means a colder coil surface.

Your system doesn’t consume refrigerant. If it’s low, there’s a leak, and adding refrigerant without repairing it is throwing money away.

3. Running the AC when it’s too cool outside

This one surprises people. Most residential systems aren’t designed to run when outdoor temperatures drop below about 60 to 62 degrees. The refrigerant pressure falls too low and the coil freezes.

In Savannah this shows up in spring and fall, on a 58-degree night when someone leaves the AC set to 68. It also happens at the coast when a system runs overnight after a front moves through.

4. A dirty or failing blower wheel

The squirrel-cage blower wheel accumulates a felt-like layer of dust in the blade cups. It can lose a significant percentage of its airflow while still spinning normally and sounding fine. We find this constantly on systems that have never been serviced.

5. Drainage problems

A clogged condensate drain can back water up into the drain pan and onto the coil, where it refreezes. Our humidity means these systems pull a lot of water, and our climate is friendly to the algae that clogs the lines. Worth reading our piece on clogged AC drain lines.

How to Thaw It Safely

Do not chip at the ice. Not with a screwdriver, not with a knife. Evaporator coils are thin aluminum and copper, and puncturing one turns an airflow problem into a refrigerant leak and a much larger bill.

Do not just turn everything off, either. That works, but it takes far longer.

The right sequence:

  1. Set the thermostat mode to OFF (or cooling off). This stops the compressor so no more refrigerant circulates.
  2. Set the fan to ON. The blower keeps pushing room-temperature air across the coil, which melts the ice several times faster.
  3. Put down towels and check the drain pan. A fully frozen coil holds a lot of water and the pan may not handle it all at once.
  4. Wait one to three hours. Heavy ice can take longer. Don’t rush it.
  5. Replace the filter while you’re waiting.
  6. Open every supply vent in the house.
  7. Turn cooling back on and watch it. If it freezes again within a day, stop running it and call us.

That last step matters. Repeatedly running a system that keeps freezing is how a $200 problem becomes a compressor replacement. Liquid refrigerant returning to the compressor, called slugging, damages it, and compressors are the single most expensive component in the system.

Preventing It

Change the filter on schedule. Every 30 to 60 days for a 1-inch pleated filter in this climate, monthly through spring pollen.

Keep all vents open. Including the guest room nobody uses.

Get annual service before cooling season. A spring visit checks refrigerant charge, cleans the coil, verifies blower airflow, and clears the condensate drain. Nearly every freeze-up cause on the list above is something a proper maintenance visit catches. Our maintenance plans cover this.

Don’t run cooling below about 60 degrees outside. Open the windows instead. It’s one of the few weeks a year you can.

Deal with small performance drops early. A system that’s cooling a little weaker than last year is telling you something.

Treat the condensate line. A cup of distilled white vinegar down the access port at the start of summer, repeated monthly, keeps algae from establishing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my AC freeze up in hot weather? Because restricted airflow or low refrigerant drops the coil below freezing, and our humid air supplies plenty of moisture to frost it. Outdoor heat doesn’t prevent it.

How long does it take for a frozen AC to thaw? One to three hours with cooling off and the fan set to ON. Turning the entire system off can take six hours or more.

Can I pour hot water on a frozen AC coil? Don’t. Thermal shock can damage the coil, and the meltwater can overflow the pan and damage your home. Use the blower.

Will my AC freezing up damage the compressor? It can. Liquid refrigerant returning to the compressor causes slugging, which is a leading cause of compressor failure. Stop running a system that keeps freezing.

Why does my AC freeze at night but not during the day? Usually because outdoor temperatures drop below the system’s operating range overnight, or because a marginal airflow problem crosses the threshold when the load is lighter.
