HVAC Air Filters: Which MERV Rating Is Right for a Savannah Home?

There’s a display at every hardware store in Savannah with filters stacked by number, and the packaging is designed to make you feel irresponsible for buying anything but the highest one.

I want to push back on that, because a filter that’s too restrictive for your system causes real problems. I’ve replaced frozen coils and burned-out blower motors that traced directly back to someone buying up.

Here’s how to pick correctly.

What MERV Actually Means

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. The scale runs 1 to 20, and it measures what percentage of particles in specific size ranges a filter captures.

Two things worth knowing right away. First, a MERV 13 filter does not filter thirteen times better than a MERV 1. The scale isn’t linear. Second, you cannot install a true HEPA filter in a standard residential air handler. They restrict airflow far beyond what a residential blower can overcome. Systems that use HEPA are built around it with dedicated fans.

Why the Highest Number Is Usually the Wrong Choice

Your blower motor is sized to move a certain volume of air against a certain amount of resistance. Engineers call it external static pressure. Residential systems typically design around roughly 0.5 inches of water column total.

A denser filter adds resistance. Push past what the system was designed for and a chain of things goes wrong:

Airflow drops across the evaporator coil. With less warm air moving across it, the coil gets too cold. In Savannah’s humidity, condensation on that coil freezes. Now you have a block of ice where your coil should be, no cooling, and water damage when it thaws.

The blower works harder. More amperage, more heat, shorter motor life. ECM variable-speed motors will ramp up to compensate, which quietly eats the efficiency you paid for. PSC motors just struggle.

Capacity falls. Reduced airflow means reduced cooling output. The system runs longer for the same result.

The filter loads faster and gets worse. A restrictive filter that’s also dirty is significantly worse than either problem alone.

I’d rather see a homeowner run a MERV 8 they change monthly than a MERV 13 they leave in for six months. The changed filter wins on both air quality and equipment health.

What I Recommend for Savannah Homes

MERV 8 to 11 for most homes. This is the safe, effective range for typical residential equipment. It handles pine pollen, dust, and mold spores, which is the bulk of what we deal with here, without meaningful airflow penalty.

MERV 11 to 13 if you have allergies, asthma, or pets, and your system can handle it. That last part is the condition most people skip. Which brings me to the next section.

MERV 13 only with verification. If someone in your home has significant respiratory issues and you want MERV 13, have a technician measure static pressure with the filter installed. It takes a few minutes with a manometer. Either it’s fine or it isn’t, and you’ll know rather than guess.

Avoid the cheap fiberglass ones. The blue spun-fiberglass panels are MERV 1 to 4. They exist to keep large debris out of your equipment, not to clean your air. If that’s what’s in your return right now, moving to a pleated MERV 8 is a genuine upgrade with no downside.

The Thickness Factor Most People Miss

This is the single most useful thing in this article, and almost nobody talks about it.

A thicker filter with the same MERV rating restricts airflow less.

A 4-inch or 5-inch media filter has far more surface area than a 1-inch filter of the same face dimensions. More surface area means air passes through more slowly and with less resistance, even at a higher MERV rating.

So a 4-inch MERV 13 media cabinet often creates less restriction than a 1-inch MERV 13 panel filter. It also lasts six to twelve months instead of one to three.

If you want better filtration and you’re worried about airflow, the answer usually isn’t a higher MERV in your existing 1-inch slot. It’s converting to a media cabinet. It’s a one-time installation and it solves the tradeoff instead of splitting the difference.

How Often to Change It in This Climate

Savannah runs harder on filters than a lot of places, because the system runs more months of the year and our pollen load is heavy.

Realistic intervals:

  • 1-inch pleated, MERV 8-11: every 30 to 60 days. Monthly during March through May pollen season.
  • 1-inch, home with pets: every 30 days.
  • 4-inch to 5-inch media cabinet: every 6 to 12 months, check at 6.
  • Washable or electrostatic: clean monthly and let it dry completely before reinstalling. A damp filter in our humidity grows things.

The honest test: pull it out and hold it up to a light. If you can’t see light through it, it’s overdue no matter what the box said.

One habit worth adopting. Write the install date on the filter’s cardboard edge with a marker. It removes all the guesswork about whether it’s been two months or five.

Getting the Install Right

Small things that matter more than they should:

Check the airflow arrow. It points toward the blower, meaning toward the furnace or air handler and away from the return duct. Backwards filters lose efficiency and can collapse.

Make sure it seals. Air takes the easiest path. A filter that’s slightly undersized lets air bypass around the edges entirely, which means you’re filtering almost nothing. If there’s a visible gap in the track, that’s a problem worth fixing.

Know where all your filters are. Some homes have a filter at the air handler, some at each return grille, and some at both. I’ve been to plenty of calls where a homeowner faithfully changed one filter for years without knowing a second one existed.

When a Filter Isn’t the Right Tool

Filters only treat the air that passes through them, and only while the system is running. For certain problems, they’re the wrong instrument:

  • Humidity. A filter does nothing for moisture. That’s a dehumidification question.
  • Odors and VOCs. Standard filters don’t capture gases. That needs activated carbon or ventilation.
  • Mold already growing in ductwork. Filtration downstream doesn’t address the source.
  • Severe allergies. A whole-home air cleaner or UV system paired with proper filtration does more than a filter alone.

If you’ve upgraded your filter and the air quality problem persists, the filter was never the issue. Worth having someone diagnose the actual source.
