Spring Pollen and Your HVAC: What Savannah Homeowners Should Do in April

If you’ve lived in Savannah through a spring, you know the week I’m talking about. You walk out to your car and it’s gone yellow. The porch is yellow. The dog is yellow.

That’s pine pollen, and while everyone focuses on what it does to their sinuses, very few people think about what it’s doing to the HVAC system that’s about to run nonstop for the next seven months.

April is the month to deal with it. Here’s what actually matters.

Why Savannah’s Pollen Season Is Different

Most of the country gets a pollen season. We get something closer to a weather event.

Chatham County sits in the middle of a lot of loblolly and slash pine, and pine produces pollen in a volume you can see with your naked eye. Our season typically ramps up in late February with oak and cedar, peaks with pine somewhere between mid-March and late April, and tapers into grass pollen through May.

The part that matters for your HVAC: pine pollen grains are relatively large. They don’t stay suspended in the air the way finer allergens do. They settle. On your condenser coil, in your ductwork, on your filter, and in the blower compartment.

And they settle right as your system is transitioning from barely running to running hard.

What Pollen Actually Does to Your System

It chokes the outdoor coil

Your outdoor condenser works by pulling air across a coil to dump heat outside. When pollen mats onto that coil, usually mixed with dust and grass clippings, it acts like a blanket.

The system can’t reject heat efficiently. Head pressure climbs. The compressor works harder, runs longer, and draws more power. You feel it as a house that doesn’t quite cool and a Georgia Power bill that doesn’t quite make sense.

In bad cases it’s the difference between a system that limps through August and one that doesn’t.

It loads your filter fast

A filter that normally lasts 90 days can be visibly loaded in three weeks during peak pine. A clogged filter restricts airflow, which in our humidity is how evaporator coils freeze over.

I’ve been on calls in early May where the homeowner was convinced they were low on refrigerant, and the actual problem was a filter they last changed in January.

It gets into the ductwork

Every time your system runs, it pulls air through returns. Whatever is in that air ends up in the duct system, and pollen that settles in ductwork doesn’t leave on its own. It sits there and gets recirculated through the house all summer.

If anyone in your home has allergies, this is the mechanism that keeps symptoms going long after the trees have finished.

It combines with our humidity

This is the coastal Georgia wrinkle. Organic debris plus 75 percent relative humidity plus a dark duct interior is a decent environment for microbial growth. Pollen on its own is a nuisance. Pollen sitting damp inside a duct for a summer is a different problem.

Your April HVAC Checklist

None of this is complicated. Most of it takes an afternoon.

1. Change the filter, then change it again. Swap it at the start of April. Check it at the end of April. During peak pollen, plan on monthly changes rather than quarterly. Write the date on the filter edge in marker so you’re not guessing.

2. Rinse the outdoor coil. Shut the unit off at the disconnect box or breaker first. Then use a garden hose, not a pressure washer, and spray the coil from the inside out if you can access it, top to bottom otherwise. Pressure washers bend the fins, and bent fins restrict airflow permanently.

If the coil looks matted rather than dusty, it needs a proper chemical cleaning. That’s a service call, not a hose job.

3. Clear two feet around the condenser. Spring is when everything grows. Azaleas, jasmine, and ligustrum all want to swallow your condenser by June. Cut them back now.

4. Check your return vents. Pull the grilles and look. If there’s a visible fuzz of pollen and dust on the inside of the return, your filter isn’t catching everything, or it isn’t sealing properly in its track.

5. Keep windows shut on high-pollen days. I know April is the nicest month we get. But every hour with the windows open on a heavy pollen day puts a load into the house that your filter then has to deal with.

6. Run the fan, not just cooling. Setting your thermostat fan to “on” for a few hours a day circulates air through the filter even when the system isn’t cooling. It’s a cheap way to scrub the air during peak season.

Where Filters Fit In

A lot of homeowners react to pollen season by buying the most aggressive filter on the shelf. That can backfire.

Filters are rated by MERV. Higher numbers catch smaller particles, but they also restrict airflow more. Residential systems are generally designed around MERV 8 to MERV 13. Jumping to a MERV 16 filter in a system that wasn’t designed for it can starve the blower and cause the exact freeze-ups you were trying to avoid.

For pollen specifically, you don’t need extreme filtration. Pine pollen is large. A quality pleated MERV 11 or 13 filter handles it well, provided you actually change it.

If allergies in your home are severe, the better answer is usually a dedicated air cleaner rather than an over-spec’d filter. A whole-home media cabinet or a UV and filtration combination does the job without fighting your blower.

When Cleaning the Ducts Makes Sense

I’m careful here because duct cleaning gets oversold in this market, and I’d rather be straight with you.

Most homes don’t need annual duct cleaning. But there are cases where it genuinely helps:

  • You’ve had visible pollen or dust blowing out of supply vents
  • The system ran all last spring without a filter, or with a collapsed one
  • You’ve recently had construction or renovation work
  • Someone in the home has persistent allergy symptoms indoors
  • There’s a musty smell when the system kicks on

If two or more of those apply, it’s worth having someone look. If none do, save your money.

What We Do on a Spring Visit

For what it’s worth, when we come out for spring service in April, coil condition is the first thing we check, because in this market it’s the most common thing we find wrong.

A typical visit includes washing the condenser coil properly, checking refrigerant charge and pressures, testing the capacitor before it fails in July, clearing and treating the condensate drain, checking the blower wheel for buildup, and verifying airflow across the evaporator.

The capacitor test is the one that saves people the most money. A weak capacitor in April is a $200 part. A failed capacitor on a Saturday in July is an emergency call.

How often should I change my filter during pollen season? Monthly during peak pine, even if the filter is rated for 90 days. Check it at three weeks the first time and see how loaded it is.

Can I hose off my AC unit myself? Yes, with the power off at the disconnect and using a regular garden hose. Never a pressure washer. If the coil is matted rather than lightly dusted, it needs chemical cleaning by a technician.

Does pollen make my power bill go up? Indirectly, yes. A pollen-coated condenser coil can’t reject heat efficiently, so the system runs longer to hit the same temperature. Coil cleaning is one of the cheapest efficiency improvements available.

Will a better filter fix my allergies? It helps, but a filter only treats air passing through the system. For significant allergy issues, a whole-home air cleaner combined with duct sealing usually does more than upgrading the filter alone.
