But “veteran-owned” shows up on a lot of home services websites, usually as a badge in the footer with nothing behind it. If we’re going to put it on ours, I think it’s fair to explain what it actually means for the person whose AC we’re working on.

The HVAC industry has a genuinely poor reputation on this. Four-hour windows. No-shows. Nobody calling to tell you the tech is running behind. If we’re going to be late, you get a phone call. That’s the whole standard, and it’s remarkable how much it distinguishes a company.

Checklists exist for a reason. Aviation and military maintenance run on documented procedures because memory fails and shortcuts kill people. Here’s the more useful part of this post. Whether or not you call us, these are the things worth checking before you let someone work on a system that costs as much as a used car.

1. Verify the license. Georgia requires HVAC contractors to hold a state license. Ask for the number and look it up through the Georgia Secretary of State. Ours is CR110616.

2. Confirm insurance. General liability and workers’ compensation. If an uninsured worker is injured in your home, that can become your problem. Ask for a certificate.

3. Ask who actually does the work. Some companies subcontract. That’s not automatically bad, but you should know who’s coming and whether they’re covered under the same insurance and warranty.

4. Get everything in writing. Diagnosis, scope, equipment model numbers, and price. Verbal quotes create disputes.

6. Check reviews with a skeptical eye. Look for detail. Reviews that describe a specific problem and how it was handled tell you more than a wall of five-star ratings with no text. Read the negative ones and see how the company responded.
